The Blog

I have memories of my Catholic school days seeing classmates go home one day with long hair and come in the next day with short hair. Back then, it was the only solution when someone got lice. I’ve never had lice but I do know how I would feel if I unexpectedly had to cut my long hair back then.

Fairy Tales Hair Care hosted a #FairyTalesMix blogger event the other night to introduce us to latest products and since summer brings along with it a different set of hair care issues, I have a feeling young and old will find many of them useful. Stephanie and I sure had fun testing them out on the terrace.

One of the products stood out — Fairy Tales Hair Care Rosemary Repel hair spray — over 1,000,000 bottles have been sold of this proprietary blend of organic Rosemary, Citronella, Tea Tree and Geranium oils clinically proven effective to help prevent lice! Here’s to no longer cringing when my head rests on the back of an airplane seat.

I also teamed up with Stephanie to to make the Rapunzel Red Ringer cocktail created by Fairy Tales which is inspired by their Rosemary Repel line. Our silliness was all up on her Snap of course. In cased you missed it, let’s just say while Stephanie is ready to compete in the World Bartender Championships, my talents exist in muddling raspberries.

Want to make one yourself? — you’ll need:

1.5 oz. Premium Vodka
6 Raspberries, muddled
1 oz. Fresh Ginger, peeled and muddled
2 oz. Grapefruit Juice

Muddle raspberries and peeled ginger in a shaker.

Add vodka, ice, and grapefruit juice. Shake well.

Serve in a rocks glass. Garnish with a rosemary sprig and candied ginger.

My Essence Beauty Box for May arrived right in time for my getaway this weekend with bae!

#EssenceBeauty Essence Beauty box May 2016

Here’s what I thought about this month’s travel size beauty essentials in the “bae-cation” themed product box –

Poo-Pourri Before You Go Toilet Spray is a great way to eliminate bathroom odor before it begins by creating a barrier on the surface of the toilet water. While I’ve used the other scents this was my first time having Poo-Pourri Rose Geranium in my hands. It’s a soft blend of rose, geranium, and citrus natural essential oils. I love it. And since Poo-Pourri already came with me on my travels, this scent will be coming along.

PUR Cosmetics Impact Plus Mascara was an instant hit for me as it lengths lashes and adds volume and curl. I’m all about my lashes and the longer they look, the more confidence I seem to have. Silly, I know but I can’t hate a photo where my lashes look amazing.

Ginger Yum ginger mint soy massage candle is a handcrafted soy candle by a Black owned business. The aroma is calming and eco-friendly and the soothing oil moisturizes your skin. Can’t wait to use it. Travel size candles are my favorite. And yes, I have been tempted to take full sized candles with me at times when I loved a scent. Thankfully Ginger Yum allows me to skip that packing craziness.

Simple Cleansing Facial Wipes gently cleanse, remove impurities and makeup while being packed with skin-loving ingredients and multi-vitamins. After a long day playing tourist (or even as a local!) there is nothing like removing the day from your face and these wipes are often within reach.

Equitance Brightening Foaming Cleanser washes away makeup and pollutants without stripping the skin’s moisture. You can start and finish your day with this luxurious cleanser and enjoy some makeup free selfies (or pictures!) because of how it takes care of our face.

Because of the May Essence Beauty Box I got a jump start packing the beauty essentials to take on my Memorial Day getaway but all of these finds would be perfect for a staycation too!

Jourdan Dunn - Maybelline New York

Jourdan Dunn shared a #MetGala prep photo of the back of her futuristic Balmain gown before leaving the Soho Grand for the Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age Of Technology Costume Institute Gala at Metropolitan Museum of Art.

I immediately needed to know more. Once the front of her dress was revealed, I couldn’t get enough of the supermodel’s makeup. I’ve been lucky enough to work with Maybelline New York so I reached out asking for more details about Jourdan’s sultry look created by Hila Karmand for Maybelline New York.

The makeup inspiration was a modern take on a futuristic look. Inspired by the hair gradient from grey to black on the shadow with a pop of color on the inner corner of the eye to reflect the dress.

Karmand applied Maybelline New York Master Prime in “Blur + Illuminate” all over Jourdan’s face to give her skin an even, beautiful canvas. Next, she mixed a moisturizer with Maybelline New York Fit Me Dewy + Smooth Foundation in Coconut , making the skin look incredibly natural with a dewy finish. She applied Maybelline New York SuperStay 24HR Concealer to conceal any imperfections and also under the brow as a highlight.

Karmand highlighted Jourdan’s face and enhanced her eyes by contouring the cheekbones, the bridge of the nose, bow of the lip, and the inner corner of the eyes using Maybelline New York Face Studio Master Contour Face Contouring Pro Palette. She then applied the blush from the same kit to the apples of the cheeks to create a shimmery wash of color that brightened up the face.

To create a gorgeous, soft smoky eye, Karmand started with Maybelline New York Eye Studio 24HR Color Tattoo Cream Gel Shadow in Audacious Asphalt all over the lid as a base. Karmand applied Maybelline New York Eye Studio 24HR Color Tattoo Cream Gel Shadow in Silver Strick in the inner corner of the eye, and then she used Maybelline New York Eye Studio Master Drama in Midnight Master to define the eyes.

Using the silver eye shadow from the Maybelline New York The Rock Nudes Palette, she swept the shade all over the upper lid. From the outer corner, she applied the glittery charcoal color and blended it over the silver shadow until a well-blended gradient was created. Using a pointy pencil brush, the grey shadow was blended with the black liner on the lower lash line to create a smoldering smoky eye.

She finished with applying a generous amount of Maybelline New York The Falsies Pushup Drama Mascara on upper and lower lashes to create drama on the eyes.

Karmand filled in and shaped brows with Maybelline New York Brow Drama Pro Palette in Deep Brown. She then set them with Maybelline New York Eye Studio Brow Drama Sculpting Brow Mascara.

Karmand completed Dunn’s look with Maybelline New York Color Sensational Lipcolor in Totally Toffee, topped withMaybelline New York Baby Lips Moisturizing Lip Gloss in Taupe for a high shine gloss with a soft wash of color.

Zoe Saldana looked stunning in Dolce and Gabbana last night at Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age Of Technology Costume Institute Gala at Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 2, 2016 in New York City.

While her entrance at the fashion event of the year held in my neighborhood made her a highlight for many watching; it was in Center Stage where she first came on my radar.

I absolutely love her. Yes, she’s gorgeous but I love seeing fellow Latinas make wonderful, positive moves in their careers. If you haven’t followed her on Insta you will probably enjoy a peek into her life with her husband and precious children Cy and Bowie.

Her makeup for the Met Gala was by Vera Steimberg for Charlotte Tilbury Beauty and I thought it would be fun to share how you can get the luminous, chromatic makeup look using Charlotte Tilbury Beauty!

1.       To prep Zoe’s skin and ensure a flawless, poreless canvas, Steimberg applied Charlotte’s Magic Cream generously to the entire face, massaging it in to plump skin and create a luminous glow. Then, she followed with Magic Eye Rescue to smooth the delicate eye area.

2.       Next, she applied Charlotte Tilbury Wonderglow on the cheekbones, bridge of the nose and brow bone to create a “spotlight” effect. For a naturally beautiful complexion, apply Light Wonder Foundation in Shade 10.

3.       To create a red carpet contour and gorgeous highlight, she used every makeup artist’s best friend, Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze & Glow in Light-Medium.

4.       For the eyes, Steimberg applied a wash of color on the eyelids with creme eyeshadow Eyes to Mesmerise in Mona Lisa and Jeanand then used the same combination to line the lower lashes for a futuristic mesmeric shimmer. Next, she lined into the lash line with the Colour Chameleon Eyeshadow Pencil in Bronzed Garnet, scribbling all the way up the lid, and blending the two jewel tones together for a more defined shadow. To enhance Zoe’s eyes and give her a wide-eyed, fresh look, she lined the lower lashes with Colour Chameleon Eyeshadow Pencil in Bronzed Garnet and used The Feline Flick to dot between the upper lashes, creating a fuller, false-lash effect. She finished with lashings and lashings of Charlotte Tilbury Full Fat Lashes.

5.       To complete the look, Steimberg opted for a nudey, soft pink lip by applying Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat Lip Liner in Pillowtalk followed by Charlotte Tilbury K.I.S.S.I.N.G. Lipstick in Hepburn Honey.

6.       Once dressed, Steimberg created the illusion of elongated, gilded-looking limbs with Supermodel Body, a slimmer shimmer that acts as shapewear lingerie for the body and catches the light for a glowing, moisturized finish.

SKII

Disclosure: This post was sponsored by SK-II through their partnership with POPSUGAR. While I was compensated by POPSUGAR to write a post about SK-II all opinions are my own.

As a little girl, I’d watch my mother get ready in the morning in front of her bedroom mirror. Her skin was always glowing. Watching her take care of her face made me prioritize proper care of mine.

Especially now that my face is the first thing viewers see when I appear in their homes early in the morning glowing, clear skin is a priority for me.

Over the years, I have been extra careful about what I eat and despite never having been prone to acne as a teen, I have it as a concern as an adult. I know certain foods could cause unwanted blemishes so I keep away from them. And I make sure to only use products that won’t irritate my skin.

SKIIpicPartnership

I was introduced to SK-II Facial Treatment Essence a couple of years ago. I recently changed up my daily routine to start with SK-II facial treatment for glowing skin because it targets wrinkles, fine lines and dull/uneven skin tones. I’m lucky to have good genes but I’m still concerned with how my skin will age.

Friends have called it miracle water and knowing celebrity makeup artist Gucci Westman used it backstage at the Rag & Bone runway show last Fashion Week gave me reason to pour facial treatment essence on my hand and pat it on my face before using any other serum or moisturizer.

I was drawn to use SK-II Facial Treatment Essence after hearing it contained an ingredient that over 35 years ago was found to cause Japanese Sake brewery workers to have youthful hands. That ingredient, Pitera — helps moderate the skin surface renewal cycle and balances the skin’s moisture barrier for overall hydration and elasticity.

When our hectic schedules make taking care of our favorite feature not easy, it’s nice to find products that will do a little extra work on our behalf without us having to even think about it.

Vegan Nail Polish

May 19th 2010

I find myself at the nail salon even during the Winter months. Of course nicer weather means more time getting mani-pedis but something about the nicer weather makes me eagerly try new polish colors and nail lacquer brands.

Here are some vegan nail polish brands that are not only eco-friendly (acetone, toulene, and DBP free) but look great.

1. SpaRitual was introduced to me while at the Spa at Sundance Resort this January. I was able to quickly pick a cute color close to the color I usually get at my local salon.

2. Urban Decay offers offbeat colors with a 220 strand application brush in their Summer of Love nail kit. Color names like Woodstock and Aquarius make it hard to ignore the brand’s love for years past.

3. ginger + liz came into my life via Robert Verdi at his Mother’s Day Tweet This party where Ginger and Liz were in attendance. They gave me a bottle of nail lacquer from their colour collection called Boss Lady but the one pictured above is called Chase Me and what girl doesn’t like to be chased.

4. Peace Keeper was ranked highest rated paint based non FD&C nail polish by Environmental Working Group’s Cosmetics Safety Database

5. A Beautiful Life soy based nail lacquers are free of carcinogens found in many other polishes.  And a relief to many of us, the colors are chip resistant so we can actually enjoy the pretty nail color we chose.
